Elliott Smith’s first solo album, Roman Candle, was released in 1994. Despite still being a member of the band Heatmiser as a singer and guitarist, Smith showcased his talents on this album with a raw, homemade sound. He played each instrument himself and recorded it on his four-track recorder. The album was initially not meant for release, as Smith only expected to secure a deal for a seven-inch record. However, after his manager JJ Gonson played the album for Cavity Search records, they immediately requested permission to release it in its entirety. Smith hesitated at first, but eventually granted permission.
