Rebels: From Punk to Dior is one of the most complete anthologies of its kind, containing the best of Janette Beckman. Known as one of the most renowned street photographers, Janette has portrayed the greatest components of the Hip Hop, Punk and underground scenes. From the images of rappers who have climbed the world rankings to the most famous fashion campaigns, this book summarizes in more than 240 pages and as many original photographs, the spirit of a generation that made history and continues to influence the world of fashion and the international collective imagination. It includes written contributions from Beckman’s peers including academia’s Jason King, Chair of NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music and Vivien Goldman, author and professor at NYU; journalists Vikki Tobak, and co-founder of PAPER, Kim Hastreiter; visual artist Cey Adams; music legends Sting, Run DMC, Paul Weller, Salt-n-Pepa, Belinda Carlisle, and Slick Rick; and fashion’s Dapper Dan, Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri, and Levi’s Chad Hinson. British-born, New York-based photographer Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for publications such as The Face and Melody Maker. She shot bands from The Clash to Boy George as well as three Police album covers and documented the youth culture of the era. Moving to New York City in 1983, Beckman was drawn to the underground hip-hop scene where she photographed the pioneers of the culture such as Run-DMC, Slick Rick, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash. LL Cool J and Big Daddy Kane. Fast forward to 2021, Beckman’s dedication to the rebellious still rings true today. Whether it’s photographing the moving BLM protests in 2020, or celebrating the subversive through collaborations with brands like Levi’s, Dior, and Gucci, Beckman has been and always will be an artist of her times.
