Turn a microscopic focus on that void, paint it in pastel colors, add a touch of Velvet Underground and internationally accented three-part harmonies, and you get something like Ditch Me by Matching Outfits. The Berlin trio’s sophomore album is about your boyfriend picking up toilet paper and some snacks on the way to your house – right before letting you know it’s over. It’s about realizing the last time your names appeared side by side was in your grandmother’s obituary. It’s also about not being able to drive and shitty jobs and the oddities of city dating culture. By turns wistful and playfully deadpan, with meandering melodies that feel both off the cuff and deeply sincere.
