The Village Soul Choir were an early 1970s pop soul outfit that were assembled by producer Sir Charles Matthews and conductor Clip Hightower. The group recorded one LP and a handful of singles in New York City for Abbott Records. Rumoured to contain a professor of psychology and a NYPD detective in their lineup while under contract with Paramount Records, the band returned to the studio for one session in Spring of 1973. Following the release of The Switch, under the name The Village Choir, the outfit recorded several sides for obscure local labels. This album features them singing and playing music from Sesame Street (“ABC’s”, the Sesame Street theme song, “Rubber Duckie” etc) plus their own funk and soul compositions.
